Renter's insurance.
It's inexpensive, often required, and it's the thing that turns a bad day into a manageable one. Here's what it actually covers and how to keep it organized with the rest of your rental.
Renter's insurance covers three things most renters underestimate: your stuff, your liability, and temporary housing when the unit isn't livable. It does not cover the building itself — that's the landlord's policy.
Look for: personal property limits that match what you actually own, a liability limit your lease requires (often $100k), a deductible you'd actually pay, and whether the property management is listed as an "additional interest" (a notification address, not a payee).
