Threatening legal action too soon.

Most rental issues are customer service problems, not legal ones — and treating them as legal from the first message tends to shut down the very help that would have solved them.

What's normal
Frustration is normal. Almost every renter has felt like sending the strongest message they can.
Your plays
Ask calmly, ask clearly, and give the office one honest chance before you escalate.
What's raising eyebrows
Leading with "I've talked to a lawyer" for a slow repair. It usually delays the fix and freezes goodwill.

When a renter opens with a legal threat, most property teams stop replying casually and start looping in their legal or risk contact. That's slower, more formal, and less flexible than the customer-service path that was still available a message earlier.

None of that means you shouldn't advocate for yourself. It means the strongest first move is usually a clear, documented ask — not a threat. If the calm ask is ignored, the ladder gives you real, defensible next steps.
