The Playbook / Love It or Leave It / Firstly — Considering Renewal

Non-Renewal Response Path.

A short set of questions to help you tell a standard non-renewal from a situation that may deserve a plain-language conversation with a tenant resource or legal-aid organization. This isn't legal advice.

Note
This framework never predicts the outcome of a legal case. It helps you organize what you know so you can decide whether to move forward with move-out planning, or first check with a tenant resource.
Question 1 of 5
Did you receive the non-renewal in writing?
Question 2 of 5
Is the notice period at least as long as your lease or local law requires?
General averages are 30–60 days. Your actual lease and local rules are what matter.
Question 3 of 5
Did you recently request repairs, file a complaint, or exercise a tenant right?
Recent = within roughly the last several months.
Question 4 of 5
Do you have a concern that the non-renewal may relate to a protected characteristic under Fair Housing?
Race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, disability, and any additional characteristics protected in your jurisdiction.
Question 5 of 5
Do you live in a jurisdiction with 'just cause' rules where the stated reason doesn't fit?
If you're not sure, that itself is a reason to check with a tenant resource.
