The Playbook / Love It or Leave It / Thirdly — Move-Out Prep & Execution
Moving out like a pro.
You're not just moving out — you're moving on. A few professional habits protect your deposit and your peace of mind.
Re-document your route
Before you start hauling boxes, walk your move-out route — hallways, stairwells, elevators, lobby.
- Take photos or video of existing scratches, dents, or marks.
- Why? So you're not blamed (and billed) for damage that was already there.
Clean vs. hire a cleaner
This is a real decision — not an automatic assumption that you owe a professional clean.
- DIY: Saves money, requires time, energy, and a sharp eye.
- Pro cleaner: Costs more upfront, but may save disputes when the lease truly requires it.
The right answer starts with what your lease actually requires — not with what feels safest. Use the DIY vs. Professional Cleaning framework before you spend money you may not need to.
Document your rental's condition
- Once the apartment is empty and cleaned, take final photos and video — every room, every wall, every appliance.
- If you painted an accent wall, return it to the original color or expect to be charged.
- Keep your photos in a safe folder — they're your insurance if deposit disputes come up.
Schedule smart
- Don't book movers for the last possible hour. Leave buffer time for cleaning or touch-ups after your stuff is gone.
- Keys usually must be turned in by midnight on your lease-end date. Don't set yourself up for a mad dash.
- Coordinate with the office in advance — confirm freight elevator reservations, move-out times, and truck parking.
Noon Knows tip
Moving is one of life's top three stressors. Give yourself grace, build in buffer time, and remember: you're not just moving out — you're moving on.
